Everything has to start somewhere and I’d like to think that this was it for me :)
It’s a two-player reaction-based fighting game. Or at least that’s what it was supposed to be. Turns out the dominant strategy is to mash all of the buttons and hope you get lucky.
The interesting thing about the game is how it was made. All of the cases were animated by hand, and the timeline would skip to the appropriate moment.
Back then I thought all games were made this way, and I imagined how difficult it must be to make bigger games.
Dragon’s Lair
Just a fun thought: the closest this game comes to is Dragon’s Lair.
Gameplay consists of reacting to on-screen button prompts which trigger pre-drawn success or failure animations, essentially a forerunner of the modern Quick Time Events.
